The 2013 List Wrap Up

The List 4I am finding it really hard to believe that another year is over… This year seems to have gone quicker than the rest, especially the last couple of months… seriously it felt a little like warp speed.  But despite the fact that I am not quite ready for 2014… it starts tomorrow and so this years list must come to an end.  This year I have done pretty well, well I think so anyway, there are still a few left, but lots that are done and dusted… but it’s been a while since there was a list update so once again I am including it all in the wrap up.

Those that have a blog of their own have a hyperlink so you can just click it and read all about it… and the ones that don’t are all listed below with either an explanation of what happened… or why it didn’t.

Like Father, Like Daughter

I can not tell how relieved I feel to have woken up this morning and discover that yesterday was not a dream.

IMG_0317This week I have been on edge… waiting all week for yesterday’s half marathon to arrive… nervous and freaking out.  Panicking about whether or not I could do it, whether or not the training that I had done would be enough, feeling uneasy about the fact that I had slacked off in the last month… right when it counted.  Worrying about what would happen… all compounded by a terrible 10km run the weekend before where nothing went right and it hurt from 3km onwards…  but now it is done and I feel really good… well my legs hurt and I am super tired… but I am feeling good about it!

I am not sure where all the anxiety for yesterday came from, but it was really intense.  I didn’t sleep well, I stressed out and I yelled at Dave about being prepared and having everything ready… none of which helped.  I think part of it may have been the fact that I tapered way to early (not on purpose, it just happened that way) and partly because when I look at my list there are lots of things that I think will be hard to accomplish and perhaps won’t be achieved this year… but they are things that take time, long term projects… but the half marathon is a single event that is hard and hurts… and I had only really given myself the one shot at it.  I think I felt pressure… from myself to do it and do it well. Even now as I sit here and reflect on it I am torn between being elated that it is done  and spewing coz I didn’t push myself 2 minutes harder and get my official time under 3hrs where I wanted it.  I knew it was going to be slow and according to my GPS on my phone I did get through the 21.1kms under 3hrs… but not according to my official time… and that hurts.  But I know that yesterday I did my best… I pushed myself the whole way through and next time… if there is a next time… I will do the same, and if I get under 3 then it will feel just as good as finishing now does.  Yesterday’s run was a mixture, I felt good running, my legs felt good  (for the first 16kms), I wasn’t too puffed or desperately counting down my running minutes or savouring my walking minutes, but when the rain started with about an hour to go… I wan’t happy… it was cold, and really really wet… not quite the sunny Sunday morning I had the first time round.  Despite the stress, the pressure and expectations I am really proud of myself, even though I had done one before, I feel like I did this one better… like I was meant to be there this time and that I earned my medal.

IMG_0358

IMG_0361I also loved running another half with Dad.  I know last time I had my brothers, and this time Dave was by my side running with me the whole time (which was probably way to slow for him, but much appreciated by me), I just loved having dad there.  Dad has been running long distances for as long as I have been alive, and even though the last 10 or so years have slowed him down on the running front and strongly encouraged him to choose other sports like cycling, he still loves it.  I remember trying to keep up with him as he took us for a run around the block when I was little and him jumping straight on board with me when I had a crazy idea to do one 4years ago – even though he probably shouldn’t have.  And yesterday having him there again was just special.  It is nice to be able to share it with him, to be proud with him, and to know that we have accomplished something impressive, independently, but together.  Although… he still runs quicker then me… whether I like it or not…

So I am super relieved that no. 9 is off the list… and so are my legs… now I can go back to other exercise fun, rather than just running.  Although I have the fun run bug again and have already been looking into what I might do next.

Here we go again… The 2013 List

Wow… I am a little bit excited that this blog has now survived to see the beginning of another year… and because I really love lists here is my 2013 list of 100 things that I would like to do/achieve in the coming year.

Like always some of them I have attempted in the past and even blogged about (in fact you can check out my old ‘lists’ here, here and here), and some of them I have never done or at least haven’t done for a long time anyway. It’s a mixed bag of all things weird, normal and wonderful… Things are always more fun when they are done with someone else, so if you see anything on the list that might tickle your fancy… let me know!

Bring on the the 2013 list.

1 Month to go

Wow… it’s December and it’s almost time to close this years list, but there are still a few things to go…. since my last update I have crossed a few more off:

7. Finish scrap booking my old stuff – completed 4/11/12
It’s all done, from 2000-2012… well what’s happened to date… all packaged neatly in a little box.

23. Buy a new dress – completed 1/11/12
My new dress was for my brother’s wedding on the 17th, which was a super lovely day which you can read all about here… but here is a picture of Davo and I all done up… 20121206-103250.jpg

27. Go on a picnic – completed 4/11/12
A nice little fish and chips on the beach… not a full on picnic, but a picnic all the same.

36. Do a fun run… well I have actually done two runs and a walk now… I think I am addicted… I walked the Parkinson’s Australia Walk, ran the 10km in the Melbourne Marathon festival and ran the 5km Color Run…  – completed 14/10/1220121206-103236.jpg

44. Go without TV for a week – completed 21-28/10/12
It was a necessary break in which I finished two assignments both worth 50% each… it was quiet and I felt a little behind in terms of world events as I didn’t really know what was going on, but I actually really enjoyed it.

67. Play my Flute – completed 20/11/12
Turns out my skills aren’t as awesome as they used to be, but it was nice to play again… maybe I might not wait so long before I do it again.20121206-093148.jpg

75. Try Listerine mouth wash – completed 20/11/12
Well I tried it, but I think the pictures tell you how much I liked it… 20121206-103258.jpg

76. Swing on some swings – completed 20/11/1220121206-093142.jpg

90. Buy that whistle song off iTunes – completed 6/11/1220121206-093132.jpg

94. Pump up my own tires – completed 13/10/12

Which means I now have a month to finish the rest… some can’t be crossed off until the very end of the year but others can which means I still have 40 to go and a month to do it… here we go… could be a big month.

Life in Colour

I have decided that I love fun runs… I love the atmosphere, I love the challenge and I love the support and this weekend I ran the very first ‘Color Run’ in the southern hemisphere… right here in good old Melbourne. And despite the fact that it wasn’t as well organised or as colourful as I had been led to believe from the advertising that preceded the event it was still a lot of fun…

To be honest I don’t really have a whole heap to say about the run… but I guess it needs a little explaining…  for those of you who are unfamiliar with the ‘Color Run’ (spelt like that because it’s a trademark from America… even though we are in Australia and it’s now wrong) it’s dubbed the happiest 5km in the world… and while it was not quite 5km… it was happy, at each kilometer mark runners and walkers alike were covered with a different coloured powder (coloured corn starch) so by the end you were a rainbow… which in real life was colourful, but the pictures don’t really do it justice… but just because I can below are some before and after pictures for you viewing pleasure:

Fitness is Heartless

It all fades pretty quick… this is something that I have learnt, and no this isn’t a morbid reflection on life, this is a reflection on my fitness…

Only a month ago I was at the peak of my fitness, and while it may have been only a small peak I was feeling pretty good about how far I had come. This time last month I ran (well ran/walked… in some slow rendition of interval training) 10km in the Melbourne Marathon Festival, which I was pretty happy about… well mostly, part of me feels like 10km isn’t that big a deal and I was so slow it’s probably not even worth writing about… but either way it’s better than where I was when I first started training again… Now a month later I feel like I am back at the beginning, I have had a week of being sick, a week of assignments, another week of being sick and a week of laziness and now I can’t run… it is a disaster! In only a week’s time I will be running the colour run (which will get a blog of its own once it’s done) and I am a little worried about how slow I will be. Luckily, I think it’s the kind of run which is best walked/danced/celebrated… and slowly enjoyed, but it really shocked me how quickly my fitness disappeared. It just seems cruel, you work so hard to build it up and then bam it’s gone… it all hurts again, you puff and pant and end up the colour of beetroot… and then just feel disappointed. I am determined not to let it beat me, I will run again, I will be fit, I will be good at exercising consistently… but I just needed to whinge about how heartless exercise is when you need a break…

I am a Runner… kinda

It is done… I made it… albeit very very slowly, but I have finished the 10km run as part of this years Melbourne Marathon, and despite the fact that I am a little bit underwhelmed because it doesn’t really compare to the 21.1km the halfers just ran or the 42 the Marathon runners conquered, I am still pretty proud of myself… and I am thinking that maybe my second half marathon won’t be as impossible as I originally thought… but maybe that’s just the excitement of finishing this morning that’s talking… anyway, these are some of my favourite pictures from today… please pay no attention to my red face… that’s normal… I hope…
