What’s in a Name?

So ages ago some guy named William Shakespeare, in a little thing called ‘Romeo and Juliet’ wrote the line ‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet’, but today I would like to dispute it…  I think there is a lot in a name… in fact sometimes I think that the name of a person or a animal can shapes who they are, perhaps I am wrong but let me give you an example.

I have a dog and his name is Dexter…  I have blogged about him before… 8 times there, also a couple more times here… in fact I have even blogged about this exact issues on a few occasions, but it’s time to bring it up again because the more I know Dex, the more I think it’s my fault… Now before we go any further I need to you understand that I really do love my dog… I mean what’s not to love about this:

But sometimes my dog makes me really really mad…

Just to be clear Dexter is named after the serial killer in the TV series Dexter, because as graphic and as morally disturbing as that show is… I love it.  He is not named after Dexter the robot from ‘Perfect Match’ or Dexter from ‘Dexter’s Laboratory’ although both of those shows did have their moment.  He is most defiantly names after the serial killer… and I think it has affected his personality as Dexter is a Destroyer… of everything… and most recently my shoe…

Never in my life have I had a dog that is able to destroy things like Dexter does… new toys are gone within minutes and recently we had to get him a new bed because he had ripped his own to shreds… and in the past he has:

Chewed through a seatbelt
Destroyed a leather chew toy
Brought us dead rats… often the same rat more than once.
Plucked a dead bird of its feathers and…
Eaten an entire collection of play dough

Now I know dogs often destroy things if they are bored or not walked often enough, but he is, and he has a massive back yard in which he can do as he pleases… Dexter destroys things because he wants to and because he enjoys it and I can’t help thinking if I had named him something different… well I might still have my shoe…

Perhaps if I called him Spot he would just love hide and seek… or if I called him Barry or Bruce he would be a better guard dog… or perhaps if, like my cousins, I called him Oink… he would be so confused that he wouldn’t have time to destroy, as he would be consumed by his thoughts, pondering exactly where he fits in the animal kingdom… Perhaps not, perhaps it doesn’t make any difference and he was always going to be a destroyer, but I have to be honest I do feel a little responsible.

No. 2 Make my own ice cream

Now despite the fact that I promised I wouldn’t let the list take over my blog I still feel like I want to record my list adventures up here too, so while I will blog about other things, unfortunately you will need to endure the bragging that comes from crossing something off the list

Last week I celebrated the fact that I had been offered a spot in the teaching course I wanted by cooking a roast and making my own ice cream… this was quite significant because I normally only do a roast on really special occasions and I had never attempted to make my own ice cream before. For Christmas this year I was lucky enough to get a new mix master, which I was very excited about, although it did come with lots of apprehension from Dave as he had always been of the believe that you should never buy your wife an appliance for important events like Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries etc. Anyway, not only did I get the mix master its self, I also got an extra bowl as well as a ‘freeze and mix’ ideal for making ice cream. So as you can imagine I was pretty keen to test it out… but I had to wait…

Anyway, after putting the bowl in the freezer for 15hrs to prepare it I had finally found the perfect occasion to test it out… and it was just as good as I hoped it would be… I made the standard vanilla and some strawberry sorbet… delicious… don’t believe me… well check out the pictures…

So there you go, no. 2 crossed off the list!  Oh and because I was making my self handy in the kitchen I also made a start on no. 54 ‘Use every appliance in my kitchen at least once’ as I used the Mix Master, food processor, blender, electric knife and the coffee machine… only a million other appliances left…

Saying goodbye to life as I know it

Well it’s official last night I enrolled myself into a uni course… again, this one is part-time and off campus which means I will being keeping everything else in my life the same just adding this on top of it all and perhaps I might have bitten off more than I can chew… but it’s too late now, it’s what I wanted, what I had been hoping and praying for and its now in my hands so I need to make it work, but I think it will mean two things… I really really really need to get organised and I am about to become a hermit… a full on hermit…

The thing is I am already busy, over the past 2years I have made a real effort to strip back my life, so to speak, to get rid of the things that I don’t need to do, things that might be good, but not great or the best option for me.  But even with all this saying no, I still find myself busy, but I guess the saying is true, if you want something done ask a busy person.

I am really excited about this next chapter in my life, it will be an interesting process learning how to balance everything again, but it might finally push me into becoming super organised which is something I wanted to do anyway.  In fact it all ready has, almost every night this week I have been sorting boxes and organising books and throwing out stuff that I should have thrown out years ago all in preparation of whether or not I would get the offer and now getting my study backing working order, ready to start.  I am pretty sure that my new course is probably the end of my current social life, which let’s face it, was already becoming non-existent and it will probably make achieving my list more of a challenge, but I think the thing that it will impact most is my holidays… I haven’t had a holiday since our honeymoon and instead of booking something massive and awesome, I have just agreed to make all my annual leave time, placement time for the course, so no long holidays in site for the next 2years… I am guessing that my ADOs are about to become quite sacred.

This isn’t the first time I have been a nerd hermit, and unfortunately I don’t think it will be the last, I survived back then, and I will survive this time… in fact, like last time, I will most likely come out better for it…

Another year, Another list

Guess what… its 2012… HAPPY NEW YEAR!  So what will 2012 bring?  Who knows? I do know that it will have it’s own excitement, it’s own worries and its own crazy moment because these things are out of my control… I also know that like years gone before 2012, for me, has a whole lot of resolutions, goals, and random things I want to be able to say I have done by the end…. So also like years gone by I thought I would use my blog to share with you all 100 things that I would like to do/achieve in the coming year. Some of them I have attepmted in the past and even blogged about (in fact you can check out my own ‘lists’ here and here), and some of them I have never done or at least haven’t done for a long time anyway.  Its a mixture of all kinds of things…  So if there is anything you would like to do with me, or could help me with, just let me know, because a little help is always much appreciated.  Hopefully as the year goes by I will once again, be able to tick them off this not so little list and put a photo or a blog up about it…  But unlike the last two lists, I am going to try very hard not to let them take over the blog… I want them to be just a nice little addition, a side project if you will…

Happy Day after Christmas

Wow Christmas is really over, all the presents are unwrapped, the parties have finished and it’s almost time to start 2012… who would have thought. Some times I think I spend so long waiting for Christmas that it is all done and dusted way to quick. Unfortunately I have no abilities to slow down time so I just have to accept it and move on.

A little while ago I wrote a blog about really listening to the lyrics of carols, and songs in general I guess and I thought that today I might share another song that has really been making me think. This song is one that before this Christmas I had never heard, as it was on one of my 2011 Christmas cd purchases. It’s a song by a guy called Matthew West and its just a reminder that even though Christmas the even is over for another year, the reason, the story and the purpose are still here and so like the weary souls from ‘O Holy Night’ we should live differently because of what has happened, and not let our everything that Christmas means… love, hope, joy, salvation, just get put in a box until we need it in November 2012, yes November, 2012.

Anyway, I have said enough, the song says it all anyway, so here are the lyrics to Day After Christmas by Matthew West…

Here comes the let down, Christmas is over
Here comes the meltdown, there goes the cheer
But before we have a breakdown, let us remember
The Light of the world is still here.

Happy day after Christmas,
Merry rest of the year,
Even when Christmas is over
The light of the world is still here
The light of the world

Come January, I’m ready for summer
The Super Bowl’s over and I’ll settle for spring
Sometimes we all need a change in the weather
But it won’t change the reason we sing

Happy day after Christmas,
Merry rest of the year,
Even when Christmas is over
The light of the world is still here
The light of the world
The light of the world
The light of the world

So take down the stockings, take back the sweaters
Take down the lights and the star and the tree
But don’t let this world take your joy after Christmas
Take joy to the world and just sing

Happy day after Christmas,
Merry rest of the year,
Even when Christmas is over
The light of the world is still here
The light of the world is still here
