For the Love of the Games
I am really disappointed that I haven’t really posted this week, this should be my prime posting time because things I love are happening everyday… and by things I love I mean the Olympics… I love them. But unfortunately other stuff has gotten in the way. Uni is back… and not only is it back, it is back with vengeance… in fact one of my subjects has decided that because uni by correspondence isn’t difficult enough to fit around oh things like… FULL TIME WORK… that they would set study tasks due weekly. Not that bad you might think… a little accountability perhaps? Sure, when there is one… but it’s not one… this week there is 8… as well as the other subjects that I need to give at least a little bit of attention to. Oh and just to top it off… in this two weeks when the world really should stop… to watch the Olympics… I have two assignments due. Needless to say… not happy Jan.
The other thing that has stopped me from posting about the Olympics is that I am too busy watching it… being on the other side of the world the Olympics are at a bad time… In fact, I get up to watch the finals, go to work while they sleep and come home to watch the heats and preliminary rounds before I go to bed.. late… and start it all over again the next morning. A bad time is an understatement… but it happens every 4 years because let’s face it Australia is kind of swimming alone out here. So I am managing to just keep my eyes open, saving all my energy for work and mindlessly watching sport each evening. I think I also thought that everyone would be posting about it because surely everyone loves it as much as me… but I have been surprised… I haven’t seen that much.
Anyway, I just wanted to apologise for not posting, despite my love… and so to make up for it, these are my highlights of the Olympics so far:
- The magic beds that lit up during the opening ceremony, although not conducive to sleeping very very cool to watch from a high angle on TV.

- The Badminton and Victoria Na– my hero… Badminton has never been better… what a superstar… Only 21 and a Melbournian like me… what a champion! Oh and nothing increases the interest in a sport like a massive scandal… so while I think it’s poor form, well done tanking scandal for drawing attention to the awesome sport that badminton is.
- Seeing the Royal Family on a regular basis – just one of the benefits of having the Olympics in London… I do love the royal family.
- Getting to see (well when channel 9 feel the time is right… which is not often… poor form channel 9) all those sports that you don’t see televised between the Olympics: for example the gymnastics, the diving, the equestrian, the judo, the weightlifting, the badminton, the table tennis… the list goes on… in fact right now I am watching the water polo… crazy.
So even if sleep and life stops me from posting regularly… be assured that I am loving the Olympics with all that I can… 4 years is way too long to wait between Olympiads.
I want to ride my bicycle
Yesterday I got a new bike… and I am quite excited. I haven’t really ridden a bike all that much in the last couple of years, in fact I usually avoid it at all costs, but recently I have found myself looking at people’s pictures of the places they have just ridden to and being a little bit jealous, just like the way I feel about pictures of people who have just completed fun runs. These are both things that I wish I could do. Now I know that technically I can do them, I just don’t… but I think I am actually at the stage where I want to, but my body hasn’t quite caught up to my brain… I am going to have to practice and train… yuck…. but I will get there.
Anyway, yesterday in a moment of weakness, when Dave asked me what I wanted to do I suggested we go for a bike ride. Sitting in my garage was a bike that my Dad had kindly given me when he returned from China. It wasn’t anything special, but it was a bike, no gears, no normal pedals, but two wheels and a frame. Once we got it back to our place Dave put some new peddles on and it had lived in the garaged until yesterday… when we dragged it out, dusted off the cobwebs and attempted to ride.
All was fine until I wanted to go up hill… no gears… no stamina… no can do… so I got off and walked. At the top of the hill I got back on and started to ride again, a little bit downhill and then more up… this time I tried to persevere… but no… the bike broke… the pedal snapped clean off. Luckily for all in the area I was in a ok mood by this stage… I didn’t cry… I didn’t throw the bike… I just got off and walked back home again.
Once at home I mentioned that I would never ride that bike again and Dave… who loves to ride… decided it was time for me to have a new bike of my own… So off we went bike shopping… and here is my new… cheap… pink… but much more effective… bike with two well attached pedals… I then attempted the same ‘track’ again… and despite my lack of fitness, it was much more enjoyable… although hills are still hard… lucky Dave can give me a boost if I need it. Oh and my new bike looked pretty awesome the whole way.
Oh and I got to cross no. 26 off the list.
A Public Announcement Regarding Change Rooms
On Monday night I indulged in water aerobics again and as you do, I went into the change rooms after to dry off and swap into some regular clothes rather than my bathers… Now when I go to the change room I am a ‘do it quick, don’t make eye contact, show as little skin as possible and get out’ type of person… but I know that not everyone is like this there are others… others that have interesting habits… very interesting habits… so this is a community service announcement for women everywhere…
If you are using public changing rooms please take note of the following:
Do NOT take everything off… do half at a time, it’s not that hard… I know we all have the same bits and pieces but I don’t want to see yours. You don’t need to air them out, you don’t need to go for a walk once you are naked… just keep going and put your clothes on… you can be naked at home… not in public.
Do NOT do stretches clothed or unclothed… You can do stretches out in the foyer… or by the pool… the change room is not an appropriate place, in fact it’s just a little awkward.
Do NOT do exercises clothed or unclothed… see above… but also note that exercises in a change room are dangerous… everyone else is trying to get in and out so don’t be swinging your legs or arms around there is not enough space for that… this is a changing room the gym is through the door.
Do NOT stop for a snack… Seriously… I can’t believe this even happened… Don’t stop, turn around, sit down and pull out a container with cut up fruit and start eating… why do you need a snack half way through changing? Change rooms are dirty and they are for changing… quickly… not eating! Does there really need to be a sign that says do not eat? Surely it’s just common knowledge… plus when you stop for a snack… where do you look? I am not comfortable, despite my quick changing, to have someone just sitting having a look around just watching the world go by… it’s weird… and disturbing… put your pants on, leave the change rooms and then have a snack… don’t do it in the change rooms.
So there you go… here endith the community announcement.
Aquarobics – That Awkward Moment When…
Last night I crossed number 97 off the list… go to aquarobics… luckily I didn’t need to do this alone I got to go with my brother and two friends… As much as I loved it there were a few awkward moments…
There was the awkward moment when you get there and realise you bring the average age of the class down by half…
The awkward moment when you are busily doing the actions and you realise your bathers aren’t covering as much as they should be…
Or my favourite from last night, that awkward moment you leap out of the water to continue the actions to the chorus of the YMCA and no one else jumps… hilarious… but awkward.
I actually really enjoy aquarobics… it really is a lot of fun and a pretty good workout.. who knows perhaps it will become more regular in my life… I think I would like it if it did… I guess that’s actually up to me?
Anyway, it’s now off the list.
Go Mixed Nuts
Last year I returned to my first sporting love… netball. Since living in Castlemaine I had started to get the netball itch because it turns out the football netball club is at the social heart of most small country towns and the more time I spent in the country the more I wanted to play… anyway, when I moved back to the big smoke I was invited to joined a mixed netball team. Now don’t get me wrong, my netball skills are… well… not great, but they are getting better and I do love playing. Last year our team Mixed Nuts was in a grade that we could compete in, we won a few… lots a few, but mostly it was pretty even. But not this season… despite the fact that we didn’t even make the finals at the end of last season, the netball association in their white uniformed wisdom, moved us up a grade… Disaster! This year we are 11-zip… I wish I could say that meant that we had won every game, but no… we haven’t won anything… no games… in fact we haven’t just lost all our games we have been smashed most of them… and while we are improving, it still sucks.
But guess what… we won tonight… yep that’s right… only by 3, but still a win… and it felt good… look at how happy we are…
All that’s left to say is Go Mixed Nuts.
What happened to March?
So seeing as another month has flown by I thought I would give a little list update to tell you about the things that I have done from my 2012 list this month, and a few in Feb, which I haven’t had a chance to share yet… so here they are in list order…
31. Go to the museum – completed 11.2.12 with Davo… and education and enjoyable day!
42. Finish unpacking my stuff in the study – completed 3.3.12 also with Davo. This ‘little’ task turned out to be a little more complicated then I had originally thought as while I tidied the study and unpacked boxes, Davo swapped our mattress over which took a lot of manuvering, but I was very appreciative. Now that I have crossed this off I can now say I have unpacked from Castlemaine… it’s only take 18months… but it is done.
72. Have a hot Jam Donut
73. Go to a football game both of these occurred together on 10.3.12, as they should, in the company of my brothers and Davo… it may have only been a nab cup game, but the hawks still dominated, buddy kicked some freak goals and the dees got done… it doesn’t get much better than that.
76. Go for a term without Maccas… completed term 1 2012… 1.2.12-30.3.12… the unexpected struggle is documented here and this is the satisfying burger once the term was done… Oh and with my return to Maccas I was pleasantly surprised by the return of the 30c cone… good job maccas!
And last but not least
84. Do 3 exercise classes… I have now down more than that, mostly in the form of Zumba, but I can safely cross it off the list – completed 6.3.12.
So there you go… those are the things that didn’t quite make a blog of their own… but you got to share them with me now…
Oh and its now 26 things down and 74 to go…
I’m too old for this…
I have decided I am getting old… I know this seems like an outrageous comment from a 24year old, but it’s true… I used to be able to stay up all night and have no issues the next day… but those days are gone. Last night I stayed up to watch Lleyton Hewitt’s match on TV, which didn’t actually finish that late, but I am really stuffed now… and it sucks, mostly because his opponent Novak Djokovic is only 24 and he was up playing tennis, full on tennis while I was whinging about being tired.
What I want to know is how did this happen? How did I get to this point where I can no longer hack the pace? And how do I get out of it? Perhaps it’s because I am not very fit at the moment, or because my diets terrible, or because I don’t get enough sleep when I should… perhaps it’s all of these things, I don’t really care what’s causing it to be honest, I just want it to stop and go back to the way it used to be… where I could party hard all night and then crash, but not a moment before I was ready! I mean what would happen if heaven forbid I got into cycling and wanted to watch the tour? I would never make it! And what concerns me even more is… what am I supposed to when the Olympics are on this year? I love the Olympics, in fact I can’t get enough of them when they are on… I love the good sports, the popular sports, the terrible sports and the just plain weird sports… how am I meant to soak up all that is London 2012 if I can’t even make it to 1am to watch the tennis? I think the only option is to pretend it’s not happening… So here is to living in denial… were I just pretend I can still do it, like right now and just have to suck it up and deal with the consequences… and in the meantime I can work or getting myself fitter… making more energy, well making my body better at using energy…and with the help of my new exercise piggy bank (no. 86 on The List)…
I say… bring on the health kick… again…
